"A Church for Today"

Picture
It's okay not to be okay. All people matter to God. Most people still believe in God and the Bible, but bad experiences have left many feeling jaded and confused. We are continuing to re-think church so that it's a place where you can ask questions about your doubts, experience authentic relationships, and embrace the fact that you matter. We are a church family that is ethnically diverse, generationally broad, and passionately on mission. Regardless of your past and faith tradition, First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) welcomes you to give church and God another try as we pursue Jesus in a different and real kind of way. Please take your time to browse our site, all are welcome...

How do I get there?
Please See Map Below.
Where do I park?
Parking is available in front of the church on Lucinda St, on the east side on Third St., and across the street to the south in the Raccoon Valley State Bank parking lot.
Where do I go?
Once inside, you will be met by greeters. You may then enter the sanctuary to your right.
Where do my children go?
Children of the age seven and younger may visit our nursery found through the double glass doors, three steps up and to your right. Children eight and above are encouraged to join you in the sanctuary and will be able to join other children during Children's Moments.
What are worship services like?
Our church provides a traditional worship with scripture based messages, hymns, children's moments and communion served weekly for believers that wish to participate.
What do I wear?
You'll find here everything from coats and ties to jeans and shorts. We want everyone to be comfortable and come as you. We are not here to judge, but to worship. By the way, Jesus wore sandals.
What else happens on Sunday?
Before service at 10:30am, we have two adult Sunday school classes that start at 9:15am, a rotation module children's Sunday school with breakfast served at 9:00am and class starting shortly after. Following service join us downstairs for fellowship.
What happens on other days?
Wednesday nights at 5pm the E.D.G.E. youth group meets. On the first and third Thursdays of the month, the Disciples Men meet at the Hy-Vee Deli at 8am for breakfast and conversation (women invited too). For other events/activities please visit our calendar.
What does the church believe?
     Like most Christians, Disciples affirm
  • Jesus Christ is the son of the Living God, and offers saving grace to all;
  • All persons are God’s children.
Beliefs and practices usually associated with Disciples include
  • Open Communion. The Lord’s Supper, or Communion is celebrated in weekly worship. It is open to all who believe in Jesus Christ.
  • Freedom of belief. Disciples are called together around one essential of faith: belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Persons are free to follow their consciences guided by the Bible, the Holy Spirit study and prayer, and are expected to extend that freedom to others.
  • Baptism by immersion. In baptism the old self-centered life is set aside, and a new life of trust in God begins. Although Disciples practice baptism by immersion, other baptism traditions are honored.
  • Belief in the oneness of the church. All Christians are called to be one in Christ and to seek opportunities for common witness and service.
  • The ministry of believers. Both ministers and lay persons lead in worship, service and spiritual growth.
